Advanced HELP with JAVA problems

Having problems with JAVA? – this article has some useful links.

PLEASE NOTE. In most cases, simply downloading the latest version of java from the JAVA.COM website solves problems.

This article covers:

1. General Suggested solutions
2. Advanced JAVA trouble-shooting with FIREFOX
3. Advanced JAVA trouble-shooting with IE 7

Before doing anything, make sure www.singlepropertysites.com is added to your list of trusted sites in both your browser and also any firewalls too. In fact, when problem solving, I always TURN OFF all the following FIRST

  • anti-virus
  • firewall software
  • disable all unnecessary ADD INs you might have in the Browser (check IE in particular as these can be quite nasty)
  • disable ALL tool bars (yahoo, HP, etc) as these can all have many pop up blockers and site blockers without you even knowing!
  • disable all unnecessary system-tray options (e.g. the Weather Channel weather gadget for your desktop ) etc etc
  • delete all temporary internet files and history (e.g. for Internet Explorer 6… on a  web page click tools, internet
options, click delete browsing history, delete all. For IE7 – go to Internet Options, General – then Clear History.. and also Delete Files – basically flsuh everything out). If the problem is solved, the turn each one on again until you find the culprit.

General Approach

First, if you are having serious problems getting JAVA to work, then make sure you remove all existing versions of JAVA and start again.
For WINDOWS systems, go to the Control Panel and use the "Add/Remove programs" to remove any JAVA components that may be on the system.
Basically ANYTHING that has the word JAVA in it!
I suggest a re-start of your PC once you have removed all programs.

Main JAVA website – this has links and options for testing your current version and getting the latest version
http://java.com/en/

Once you have re-installed, I’d suggest re-booting PC again (a pain I know)

If you have Internet Explorer this re-install is fairly trouble free.(however, see further notes and help on IE below)

FireFox.

If you have FireFox, then you may have further issues.
If FireFox is just ignoring JAVA, i.e. it seems as if JAVA isn’t actually installed, then you may have remenants of the OLD JAVA system still connected into the config environment of FireFox.

This is the FireFox knowledgebase article I found that helps with this http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Java
Basically, in my case, I read this article in the section called "Remove outdated Java plugin files from the Firefox plugins folder:"

In this section they explain how to remove ‘old’ plug-in files. So I did follow their instructions (went to "about:plugins" page and found the list of files that were associated with ANY JAVA) and then went to the directory they mention and deleted them.

I then ran the JAVA install again. and all worked in Firefox… at last.

For IE7 (Internet Explorer version 7)

It appears that IE7 can quite often crash (display error and then close) without any specific reason given.

Add-ons are the most common causes of IE7 crashes.
SOLUTION >> Return IE to default settings which will disable all the add-ins. Then one by
one enable the ones you need for the sites you use.
To do this – Go to ‘Tools’, then ‘Internet Options’, then ‘Advanced’ tab. In this tab, find and click the ‘RESET’ button
